I've begun to deviate from the normal bowl in the past few months, though the bulk of my time is still spent working on my technique and seeking that "perfect" curve. I've been experimenting with a few vase forms and other oddities, so please take a look at some of my newer work and let me know what you think. You can get in touch with me via email at mydadandme@bellsouth.net if you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces displayed on these pages. Further contact information is available on the contacts page; feel free to call or email me with any questions you might have. |

“Silver Lining” Bowl #93 (Spalted Silver Maple) Price: 325.00 ~ SOLD! This piece of silver maple was rescued from the Cobb County Dump where it had been discarded as worthless. This is one of the most exciting privileges that a woodturner has: taking a seemingly worthless piece of timber and adding a little expertise and a lot of hard work to retrieve its beauty. All of the color and markings in this bowl are completely natural; no stains or creative maniplulations have been used. What you see is the creativeness of our great God! “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” Romans 1:20 |
“Jeanne” Bowl #63 (Live Oak) Price: 1,250.00
Hurricane Jeanne created havoc for victims in Florida but proved to be a blessing to us. My brother-in-law, Bruce Harris, who was called upon to help restore power to many of the homes devastated by this storm, brought us back this piece of Live Oak with some of the spanish moss that covered its limbs. We were excited to have the opportunity to shape a piece from such a magnificent tree. We turned the vase without air-drying the wood as we normally do, but then we placed it in a bath of oil to slow the drying time and help prevent cracking, but still allowing for warping. Notice the character of this piece with its undulating rim and rolling texture. “God is our refuge and strenth, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.” Psalm 46:1-3 |

“Reject” Bowl #94 (Black Walnut) Price: 275.00 ~ SOLD!
The trash to treaure aspect of woodturning is a recurring theme in this gallery, and it is still one of the most satisfying features of what I do. The log from which this bowl came was particularly “trashy.” It was a reject from a local sawmill yard, but this is just the kind of timber that can make spectacular bowls! How good God is at this trash to treasure transformation in our lives, as He moves us from unworthy sinners towards Christ-likeness. “The earth is the LORD’S and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” Psalm 24:1 |
“Party Platter” Bowl #70 (White Ash) Price: 385.00 This party platter is unique in that it was carved from one huge block of wood from a white ash tree. The raised bead was not an applied trim, but rather was left standing and all the other adjacent wood was turned away. The new lathes of today are capable of much more than simple bowls, and are designed to allow the craftsman great freedom in creating fine pieces of art. “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” Galations 5:13 |

“A Pair of Pears” (Bradford Pear) Bowl #60 (Left) Price: 375.00 ~ SOLD Bowl #58 (Right) Price: 375.00 ~ SOLD
These complementary Bradford Pear vases are simple in form, yet their appearance does not necessarily reveal the patience and skill that it took to shape these little hollow forms. A painstaking process of turning the lathe on, cutting with a hollowing chisel for mere seconds, and then turning the lathe off in order to clean out the excess shavings is repeated hundreds of times before you are rewarded with the finished product you see here. One wrong move during this tedious process and your dividend will be a broken vessel good only for discipline and instruction, but offering very little in the form of monetary gain. “Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.” Proverbs 25:4 |
“A Chip off the Ole Block” (Black Cherry) Bowl #29 (Top) Price: 385.00 Bowl #28 (Bottom) Price: 275.00 Some of you that are part of the over forty crowd may remember a television show entitled, “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.” I can still hum the hook line of the theme song, and remember the words of the opening line: “People let me tell you about my best friend.” These two bowls brought this instantly to my mind as they appear as “father and son” thus “a chip off the ole block,” in this case in the literal sense. “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:19-20 |

"Gettysburg" (American Beech) Bowl #22 (Top) Price: 750.00 Bowl #21 (Middle) Price: 325.00 Bowl #23 (Bottom) Price: 350.00
The ebony black and cinnamon brown spalting lines found in these beautiful Beech pieces are often referred to as battle lines since they are created when two fungi meet and fight for their existence. It seemed only appropriate to name this grouping Gettysburg. No other fight is so vividly impregnated in our minds, even though it’s been nearly 140 years since Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865, ending the Confederate’s bid to gain the right to secede from the Union. Just as the War Between the States left many lives devastated, the war that raged in this once pure white wood has created a scarred landscape, riddled with the casualties of battle. Wood turners often go to great lengths submerging their bowl blanks in all forms of homemade brews to encourage this spalting to occur. Since it takes months and sometimes years to form these battlefields, the end result is highly favored and sought after. It’s remarkable how God uses even the smallest seemingly insignificant activities of fungi to enhance His creation. “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” Luke 12:27 |
